Wood Countertops with Sinks by Grothouse

We are often asked if wood countertops can be used with sinks and the simple answer is yes, at Grothouse, we craft wood counters with sinks every day. A quick look at our design gallery shows the beautiful kitchen designs with wood countertops containing sinks. It is simply a matter of understanding the science of wood, and proper engineering of the wood countertop finish.

Our wood countertops can be finished with food grade oil for direct chopping or our waterproof Durata® finish, regardless of finish type each sink cut out is specially crafted and treated to last a lifetime. Durata® finish is so waterproof, we use to seal our custom made wood sinks.

What sink is the best choice? Our preference is to use an undermount sink with wood countertops, as the water can be easily sweeped into the sink and not collect around the surface lip of overmount sinks. For countertops treated with Durata® finish, the sink type is not of significant concern. Concrete sinks should be properly cured prior to installing in a wooden countertop. Concrete shrinks when it cures and if the concrete is shrinking after securing to the counter, it could cause cracking and splitting of the wood surface.

Drainboards are often incorporated into wood countertops with sinks. Below are examples of drainboard, properly sloped to ensure the water drains into the sink.
