30 Years of Craftsmanship: The History of Grothouse

May 26, 2026

As Grothouse enters its 30th year, it’s a moment to reflect on how a small lumber operation evolved into a leader in wood countertops and custom wood surfacing.

What began as Grothouse Lumber in 1997 has grown into a company known for engineering-driven craftsmanship, custom solutions, and long-standing partnerships across the design and build community. But the foundation of that story started much earlier.

Where It All Began

Paul Grothouse’s introduction to woodworking began in childhood, learning alongside his father in a home-based shop. Surrounded by heirloom furniture and hands-on craftsmanship, he developed an early understanding of wood, not just as a material, but as something with character, history, and potential.

Even so, woodworking wasn’t his original career path. Paul began in the corporate world, starting Grothouse Lumber as a side business. As demand grew, so did the opportunity, and eventually, he made the decision to fully commit to building what would become Grothouse.

From Lumber to Wood Countertops

In the early days, Grothouse set out to do something few others were attempting- create premium, high-performance wood countertops and butcher block surfaces using an engineering-driven approach.

At a time when wood was not widely trusted for demanding applications, Grothouse focused on solving the challenges others avoided. This included developing advanced techniques for end grain butcher block, producing surfaces with exceptional thickness, durability, and long-term performance.

This focus on engineering, combined with a deep understanding of wood as a material, became the foundation of the company’s growth.

An Engineering-Driven Approach

From the beginning, Grothouse has approached every project with a solutions mindset.

Rather than limiting what’s possible, the team works to find ways to make complex designs achievable, whether that’s through structural innovation, custom manufacturing and fabrication, or new product development.

As Paul Grothouse puts it:

“We’re not in the business of saying no. It’s not our job to put walls up for our customers. It’s our job to find the doorways.”

This philosophy continues to guide how Grothouse designs and builds wood countertops and custom surfaces today.

Craftsmanship Meets Innovation

Over the past three decades, Grothouse has combined traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing and engineering advancements.

Each wood surface design is the result of:

  • Careful board selection to maintain natural grain flow
  • Precision manufacturing, fabrication, and joinery
  • Meticulous sanding, staining, and finishing

This process ensures that every piece not only performs well, but also feels cohesive and intentional within a space.

From kitchen countertops and butcher block islands to floating shelves, stair treads, and architectural elements, Grothouse continues to expand how wood can be used in design.

Built on Relationships

Grothouse has always viewed its work as collaborative.

The company partners closely with designers, architects, and builders to bring ideas to life—often developing new solutions based on real project needs. Many of these relationships span years, built on trust, communication, and shared creativity.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Based in Germansville, Pennsylvania, Grothouse operates on a 50-acre farm and remains committed to U.S. manufacturing.

Wood is a renewable resource, and responsible sourcing is a core part of the company’s approach. In the U.S., forests continue to grow at a rate that exceeds harvesting, making wood countertops a more sustainable alternative to many other surface materials.

This commitment extends beyond materials to the way Grothouse designs and manufactures its products.

What Defines Grothouse Today

After nearly 30 years, Grothouse continues to be defined by a balance of:

  • Engineering and problem-solving
  • Craftsmanship and artistry
  • Strong partnerships within the design community

As Paul Grothouse describes it:

“If I were asked to choose only one word to describe Grothouse, it would be excellence- in every sense of the word.”

Looking Ahead

What began as a small sawmill has grown into a leader in wood countertops and integrated surface solutions. Over three decades, Grothouse has expanded into custom furniture and architectural elements, bringing Paul Grothouse’s early influence in furniture making full circle.

Today, that same foundation of craftsmanship, engineering, and problem-solving continues to drive the company forward. While much has evolved, the mission remains the same: to create wood countertops and custom wood and Anvil™ Metal surfaces that perform, inspire, and elevate the spaces they’re part of.

As Grothouse looks ahead, that commitment to innovation and collaboration continues to shape what’s possible.

If you’re planning a project and looking for a partner who can bring both engineering expertise and craftsmanship to the table, Grothouse is ready to make your design vision a reality. Let’s start that conversation now.
