Organic and earthy aesthetics, personalized style and expression, along with material sophistication – these are three of the top takeaways from the NKBA’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Report. Grothouse wood countertops are aligned to play a leading role in each of these themes. Wood is the surface material, but which wood? Intentionality, when selecting wood species, impacts the overall aesthetic and influences performance as well as project timing.
We wanted to highlight a few current designer favorites: White Oak, Wenge, and Sapele Mahogany. Knowing more about the species and their unique traits will help guide your selections, ensuring a perfect union of function and form.
White Oak
White Oak is one of the most requested looks in luxury interiors. Grothouse is well-positioned to support surfacing needs in flat grain, edge grain, and end grain construction styles.
White Oak is a native U.S. species, widely available and highly renewable within the timber harvesting ecosystem. It is a consistent species seen often requested in rift sawn pattern, with distinct delineation between early and late wood creating a robust grain pattern.
Standout traits:
- Open grain that accepts stains and finishes beautifully
- Quarter sawn format produces an amazing medullary ray flake (a ribbon-like effect)
- Responds well to texturing techniques such as hand planing and wire brushing
- Works well with Food-grade oil finish, Pigmented Oil finishes, and Durata®
- Prime choice for end grain butcher blocks
- Trending in coastal and beach-influenced designs
Uses and placements include prep areas, statement islands, wood countertops, wall paneling, shelving, and stair treads throughout homes and commercial projects.

Wenge
For projects calling for bold contrast and unmistakable presence, Wenge offers one of the most striking natural palettes available.
Wenge is a species native to the forests and river basins of Central and West Africa, uniquely dark, displaying a strikingly strong grain figure that displays a ring structure, with early and late wood development delineation.
Standout traits:
- Tremendously dense, with high impact resistance
- Its naturally dark, exotic hue does not respond well to staining.
- Optimal with Grothouse Original Oil™ Finish or low sheen Durata® finishes
- Quarter and rift sawn format displays straight grain
- Flat sawn format shows strong cathedral figure
- Presents a bold design statement
- Responds well to texturing techniques such as hand planing and wire brushing – highlighting strong grain delineation
Wenge offers warmth and luxury, well-suited for kitchen prep areas, statement islands, in-home bars and executive offices.

Sapele Mahogany
Sapele delivers warmth, movement, and timeless character, ideal for interiors seeking richness without excess.
Sapele Mahogany is native to tropical Africa, and while part of the same family as Genuine Mahogany, it offers a more sustainable, readily available and FSC Certified option. It is typically denser, darker, and browner (less red) than Genuine Mahogany, and these qualities have made it a dominant choice in the U.S.
Standout traits:
- Deep, rich color
- The density offers impact performance
- Grothouse ensures quality and color consistency through responsible harvesting from specific regions
- Fine grain, comparable to Traditional Mahogany
- Quartersawn format creates beautiful iridescent ribbon graining
- Responds well to textural finishing techniques and staining
Sapele surfaces introduce a dramatic accent into home and commercial spaces. As a Mahogany-adjacent species, it provides value, performance, and beauty to any project.
