Designer Days give a closer look at what happens inside our workshop with small gatherings that make space for designers to see how things are made, meet the people behind the work, and ask questions in real time.
A More Personal Experience
Each group is intentionally kept small. That way attendees can take their time, look closely, and have real conversations with our team. The day begins with a light breakfast, followed by a walk through the rough mill. Stacks of raw wood, early production steps, and the sound of machinery set the stage for what’s to come. One designer described it as “really cool to see everything happening in the shop, to see the live demonstrations as well as learn more about the products that are offered and the options that are available through Grothouse.”
A Walk Through the Process
From there, the group moves through each part of the process. They see the progression from raw lumber to finished surface, meeting the specialists who guide every step. Paul Grothouse leads the tour, with support from leaders across departments who are there to answer questions and share insight into their part of the process.
For many, the engineering side of the work stands out the most. One attendee reflected that it was “super beneficial as a designer to understand some of the engineering that’s required to bring the ideas that may rest in our brains to life and to really understand the processes that are required to make our client’s dreams a reality.” Another noted how surprising it was “to see the level of engineering that goes into the countertops,” an insight that proved “incredibly useful as a business owner with almost zero free time.”
Time to Connect
Midday, the group pauses for lunch and conversation. It’s a chance to talk shop, hear directly from engineering, sales, and marketing, and look more closely at samples. The discussions are practical: how projects come together, the challenges that can arise, and the solutions that make them possible. One guest summed it up by saying the day was “an exceptional use of time because it introduced me to the bandwidth and scope of unique projects that Grothouse can do and how they partner with you to support the technical processes that make your project a success.”
